After graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia, Becca joined her Chi Alpha’s staff as a missionary as well as the XAi director for her campus and area. After her years as a missionary in Chi Alpha, Becca moved to St. Louis where she is now living on mission in the workplace. Becca lives on mission daily while being the general manager for a lawn care company by being intentional and loving those around her. How did Chi Alpha impact your life?
While I grew up knowing that Jesus loved me, it wasn’t until getting involved in Chi Alpha that I learned about and experienced true discipleship. I learned to live my life, in every way, intentionally for Jesus. Life changing to say the least!
What is your current occupation? What do you do on a day to day basis?
I am the general manager for a lawncare company. You name it, I probably do it unless it is the actual lawncare part of the job. I leave that to the experts. I am involved in hiring, customer relations, and account management, sales and marketing, etc.
How are you continuing to live on mission and be involved in discipleship?
While discipleship in my life may not look like weekly one-on-one’s with the people I was discipling or with the person discipling me, discipleship is still happening. Intentionality seems to be key. It’s being intentional about introducing Kingdom culture into the workplace through how I speak with people, the attitude I have, or the extra time I take to get to know the quiet woman in the back office. It’s also being intentional about getting to know the stories of the people at my church and engaging in vulnerable Jesus-centered discussion at my life group. It’s also being intentional in learning from and sharing with the alumni that have come before me and will come after me.
How have you found the ability to give in the marketplace impact your walk with God?
I love budgeting to invest both in my current church and in my Chi Alpha and the missionaries it has sent out. Time is also a resource I can give. I’ve enjoyed grabbing a couple other alumni friends and helping serve at Chi Alpha events so the staff and students can be freed up to do the most important job, connecting with people!
What advice/encouragement would you give other alumni who are trying to live on mission in the marketplace?
Be intentional. Be intentional about feeding your soul; be intentional about feeding other souls. We were designed to live life in community, but finding and getting involved in a new community takes intentionality. It’s likely that it won’t be easy, but it’s worth it. Find a godly community to be a part of and if there isn’t one, you have been a part of a Chi Alpha, so you likely have tools to be a part of creating the community you and so many others so desperately need. Remember, you carry the very presence of God with you into every community you are a part of. You never know what the Holy Spirit will do with your Spirit-Filled intentionality.
Do you have any specific stories about what it looks like to minister to people you work with?
Every week, I have the chance to connect with, love on, and pray with the woman that cleans the office. Her first week at the office, I felt prompted to ask if I could pray with her and she enthusiastically said yes! We’ve prayed for healing, we’ve prayed for peace and comfort in the midst of deep grieving, and we’ve prayed for everything in between. And what’s even better is I know some coworkers are listening. Who knows what seeds are being planted or watered every Thursday at noon!
